WHAT IS TRUTH?
With so much dishonesty in the world we would do well to question what truth is. In fact for those who are fed up with being told lies day after day on television, on the radio and in newspapers, we should demand to be told the truth. But the problem we are faced with is who is going to do that and who should we listen to?
Questions we may well ask are:
- Whose interpretation is correct?
- Is truth something that is true for me and not necessarily so for you?
- If so who is right, because if you are right then someone else must be wrong.
There is a way of looking at truth that has crept up on all of us and has caught many ‘on the hop’ to such an extent that we are unaware of the consequences of this belief and thought pattern.
- The new way is the belief that all opinions are equal and that they are just as valid as the next.
- That each has its own point to make and should be accepted as such.
- The problem this way of thinking has is that it forces a new kind of tolerance upon us all.
- Sadly this is what our young people of today are being taught in school colleges and universities across the world.
If you have ever wondered why and how it is that so many embrace thought patterns and life styles that a few years ago would have been soundly condemned then you have your answer.
The new tolerance forces us to accept that all belief systems, lifestyles, values and perceptions of what constitutes truth as equal and that there is no one that is more right and correct than the other.
- Who is to say your way of thinking is the right way?
- Who is to say that your way of looking at the issues of life is correct?
What emerges from this process (and it is a process that is undermining the very fabric of society) is the dogmatic statement that absolute truth does not exist, and if it did you cannot specifically identify it and label it as such because it is relative to your particular beliefs, and because there are so many different beliefs you cannot say your belief is more true than any other truth.
- The new tolerance prohibits anyone from being intolerant of other belief systems.
It is, therefore, reasonably simple to analyse why and where this thought process and new tolerance comes from.
Over the last decade or so there have been movements aplenty concerned with:
- The Brotherhood of Man.
- That man is inherently good and that all that is needed is for man to realize his true potential to bring about peace and harmony in this war torn world in which we live where hatred, violence and greed are so prevalent.
- Libraries and book shops in every city are awash with information on how to find yourself, how to release the inner being, the power of thought, imagery projections and out of body traveling guides.
- Horoscopes and get rich quick schemes using the power of the mind by releasing the energy we all possess are freely available for a small fee.
- We are also reminded time and time again of our rich diversity and that we must be tolerant of others and their belief systems and embrace the diversity because this is truly what we are!
Going back to our original question:
What is Truth?
Where do we find the answers?
At risk of breaking the fundamental rule underpinning the new tolerance I am going to make a dogmatic statement and say that The Bible is the only source of Truth and it is all we need.
I will illustrate what I mean by citing a few scriptures:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His Glory, the Glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1, 14)
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, If ye continue in my Word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)
“Jesus saith unto him (Thomas) I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)
What the new tolerance has failed to realize is that it is not WHAT is truth it is WHO is truth. It is also possible that we have failed to grasp this fact.
They have failed miserably to realize that truth is a PERSON not a concept to be messed around with by man. (I will leave it up to you, the reader, to decide whether this failure is by choice or design.)
They have also failed to grasp that it is not relative to one man’s belief system and feelings of right or wrong.
God created us and instilled in us His Spirit which witness’s to us right from wrong and we are indwelt with this knowledge.
Sadly Man has chosen to turn his back on the only true source of truth, he has chosen to do wrong and to go his own way, and furthermore to arrogantly justify his wrongful actions he has invented a system of beliefs that are contrary to what God intended us to have and to hold dear to our hearts.
“But we have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty (shame), not walking in craftiness, nor handling the Word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. But if our Gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give light of the knowledge of the Glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2Corinthians 4:2-6)
The new tolerance has brought absolute truth, honesty and integrity crashing down around our heads and has thrown it into a pot, a cauldron, if you like, to be stirred up and mixed up with every conceivable crackpot theory imaginable and then it has dished the mixture out on the whim and fancy of those professing to be wise and knowledgeable concerning the real issues of life, to all who do not want to know, see or hear the truth.
Are things any different today from that of old?
I think not.
Two thousand years ago mankind was confronted by THE TRUTH in the person of Jesus Christ.
- He stood in front of them and told them He was THE TRUTH.
- They took up stones to stone Him.
- They would not hear Him.
- They would not believe Him.
- They mocked Him.
- They ridiculed Him.
- They arrested Him and took Him to a court of law and charged Him with blasphemy.
- He was not even found guilty.
- He was handed over to the people who were determined to get rid of Him.
- They beat Him.
- They spat at Him.
- They forced a crown of thorns onto His head.
- They forced Him to carry His own cross.
- They nailed His hands and feet to the cross.
- They mocked Him while He hung dying on the Cross and they even cast lots on His clothing.
And the new tolerance will have us believe that their brand of individual beliefs, lifestyles, values and perceptions of truth are all equal and that we are to accept and respect the different opinions of others and not judge them for who they are and what they believe.
I think not!
The new tolerance and the world claim that absolute truth cannot be known.
Sadly the world is right!
Put simply it is because:
- They do not WANT to know the truth.
- They do not WANT the Author of Truth in their lives.
- They actually WANT nothing to do with Him.
Is it, therefore, any wonder that muddled thinking is the order of the day and that attempts to teach and guide our young people fall so far short of actually tackling the issues facing us, causing, as they do, far more problems than they purport to solve.
If our Creator says that there is only one way to live, why do we not listen?
Why do we not instantly obey?
Why are we more worried about what other people think about us than what God thinks about us?
My prayer is that you will accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour now whilst you still have time, because there is coming a day when the luxury of putting off deciding for Jesus will have passed and there will be no turning back, in fact it will be too late.
The scriptures tell us:
“From a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus, all scripture is given by inspiration (God breathed) of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2Timothy 3:15-17)
So there you have it!
The TRUTH, from the Bible itself.
There is no need to invent ways of finding peace, harmony and understanding together with respecting and tolerating a multitude of belief systems in order to satisfy our consciences, because this type of thinking gets us nowhere. The state we find our world in today provides more than enough proof that we are in one monumental mess! A mess so large that no-one is able to put it right, in fact a mess that our leaders are totally ignoring.
We need to realise that real truth is not a relative issue and that it resides in the person of Jesus Christ, and knowing this, should make us want to accept His message of love and real hope with open hearts and minds. Won’t you do that today?
Ask Him into your life today. Don’t put it off.
