Recommended Reading

With book rooms and libraries awash with publications, magazines and pamphlets on every subject imaginable, it is extremely difficult to know what to read and what to believe.
There are many very good books on the market and there are equally as many very bad books. Some point you to the Bible but sadly, an increasing number point the reader away from what the Scriptures teach, and this is where the danger lies.
Many have asked me to recommend books to read and have asked how to identify those that should be avoided. To answer them I feel it is important to set a few ground rules:

• There are some who say we think in pictures – well, you may be surprised to learn that we do not think in pictures, we think in words.
• The Bible says:

Thy Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

• It does not say:

The meanings I conjure up in my imagination beyond your words, are a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

• Our DNA is one of the most amazing things known to man. On our DNA God has written the precise instruction manual for each and every tiny cell for each and every one of us, because that’s where we began! The instructions are written for that tiny cell to replicate itself and build a body of more than a hundred trillion cells and it’s all laid out in words!
• The Apostle Peter says: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God… 1Peter 1:23
• Peter emphasizes being born again by the Word of God.
• We are told to: go into all the world and preach the Gospel, using words!

However there are those who teach and preach that we are to:

• Delve into these words to discover a deeper meaning behind them.
• We are to probe the possibility of a mysterious meaning within them.
• We need to flesh out what they are saying to us.
• Then we must explore how we feel about them.

This is not only pure nonsense, it is the path into the wilderness of doubt and denial of the truth. It is a trip into confusion and chaos, which many have undertaken. It undermines the Word of God.
People are saying it’s not in the words, its how you feel about them that is important.
We must understand what we read. The Bible emphasizes understanding. Words have meaning. This is the way the entire human experience works. We cannot believe what we don’t understand.
You read a portion of the Scriptures slowly, then you begin to think and meditate on what you have just read. Sadly there are many who do not meditate in terms of understanding the words or the meaning of the words, they claim it is more important to understand how you feel about what you have just read. So they end up playing the game of: How do I feel about this? How do I feel about that, because understanding my feelings will lead me to the truth!

What it actually leads to is asking God for the meaning of feelings, which have become the criteria for truth! What they are really saying is; the meaning is not in the words, but somehow there is a meaning beyond them!

Finally, the pursuit of wisdom leads to understanding and should be exalted and revered. The following Proverb, lifted from the Scriptures urges us to seek after wisdom and understanding.

Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.
Proverbs 4:5-9

Below is a list of books which I have no problem recommending because they exhort and encourage the quest for wisdom and understanding. They have been an enormous help to me in my walk with the Saviour, and it is my sincere prayer you will discover the same.

THE HOLY BIBLE
This is one book that cannot be recommended more highly. It contains:
The mind of God, the state of man, the way of Salvation, the doom of sinners and the happiness of Believers. It is a mine of wealth, a river of pleasure and food to support you. Its doctrines are binding and its histories are true. Its decisions are fixed and binding with Christ as its Grand Subject. Read it to be wise and believe it to be safe. Practice it to be Holy. Read it slowly, frequently and prayerfully. It should fill the memory and rule the heart. It should guide the feet as well as your mind. It is given in life and will be opened in judgment. It will be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility and will reward the greatest labour. It will condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents. It is the Word of God which will stand forever!

A COMMENTARY ON GENESIS
THE BOOK OF BEGINNINGS

HALLEY’S BIBLE HANDBOOK

Halley’s Bible Handbook was born out of the conviction of Henry H. Halley that everyone ought to read the Bible daily. From its first edition, a small give-away booklet of 16 pages, it has grown into an 864-page “almanac” of biblical information, used regularly by hundreds of thousands of laymen, teachers, and ministers. Halley’s Bible Handbook contains more biblical information than any other book of its size. It has been a continuous best-seller through the years and has sold more than five million copies in many languages.
For those who wish to know more about the Scriptures, I would recommend this book.

 

THE MOST HOLY PLACE

The Most Holy Place is a collection of sermons preached by Spurgeon on the Song of Solomon during his ministry in London. They are Spurgeon at his best: pithy, vibrant, engaging, arresting and driven by his desire of the preacher for his hearers to know Christ.
