WHAT’S LEFT OVER

Luke 6:26

Woe unto you, when all men speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. KJV

Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets. NIV

Luke 16:15

And He said unto them, “Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.” KJV

He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.” NIV

One of the amazing revelations (and there are many) in the Word of God is that what man casts away, God keeps and what man keeps God casts away. Many Scriptures bear out this truth. Man will always gravitate toward and be attracted to the rich and famous, but God has chosen the poor of this world to be recipients of His promises. Footballers immediately come to mind when speaking of the rich and famous probably because they earn such outrageous salaries for kicking a bag of air around a field, and yet portray mankind in the worst possible light with their conduct and behaviour on and off the field. I am not saying all footballers are like that but unfortunately there is a stigma attached to their profession that is somewhat unsavoury to say the least, and yet the general public look up to them and almost worship them and the teams they represent. Young people even copy the behaviour of their heroes. The father of a young fan who was punched, kicked and trampled to death after a particularly brutal crowd brawl following a football match, put it all into perspective when he said the following: What have we become? Why do we do to each other what wild animals don’t do? We have lost our way in life. I have lost everything that was precious to me. I have lost my son! And nobody cares! All because of a football match.

What man thinks of as wise, God calls foolish and what man thinks of as foolish, God calls wise, because God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise and the weak things to confound those things man would consider tough and mighty.

If you stop and think about it, this is exactly what happened to Jesus:

  • He came from Heaven to be born in a stable.
  • His Mother and Father could not even find a proper room in an inn.
  • He was born amongst cattle and other farm animals.
  • He grew up surrounded by people who had no idea who He was.
  • He proved Himself over and over again to be the Son of God.
  • One week the people heralded Him as their King.
  • The following week they called for His execution.
  • They exchanged Him for a common criminal.
  • They crucified Him and then went about their daily business as if nothing had happened.

What’s left over? is our question for today. How do you answer it?

Salvation is offered by Jesus because of what he did for us on the Cross of Calvary.

  • Do you think that is foolish?
  • Do you think that is weak?
  • Do you think that is wise?

The answers you give will depend on where you will spend eternity when you leave this life and enter the next. Just remember that God loves you and wants you to be saved from the wrath to come. Come to the Saviour now!
