WHAT WILL YOU DO FOR MONEY?

30 pieces of silver

Matthew 26:14-15

Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the Chief Priests, and said unto them, “What will ye give me, and I will deliver Him unto you?” And they covenanted with him for 30 pieces of silver. KJV

Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. NIV

The deceitfulness of the heart has no boundaries. There is nothing that man will not stoop to do for the gain of riches. The Scriptures are right when it says:

1 Timothy 6:10

The love of money is the root of all evil. KJV

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. NIV

I cannot begin to imagine what was going through the mind of Judas when he thought for one minute that he would get away with betraying Jesus.
Think on these things for a moment:

  • Judas was chosen by Jesus to be one of His disciples.
  • Judas was one of His followers.
  • He knew Jesus intimately.
  • He lived with Jesus.
  • He walked with Jesus.
  • He heard Jesus preach and teach.
  • He travelled from place to place with Jesus spreading the Gospel.

I cannot think of any higher or more privileged position than to actually be with the Saviour day by day, and yet this was not good enough, so Judas went to the Chief Priests to cut a deal with them so that they could capture Jesus and put Him on trial. And they would pay him for doing so!

Matthew 28:12-14

And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, saying, “Say ye, ‘His disciples came by night, and stole Him away while we slept.’ And if this come to the Governor’s ears, we will persuade him and secure you.” KJV

When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole Him away while we were asleep.’ If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” NIV

Here is another instance when money will do its dirty work and be used to cover up the truth. And if this comes to the Governor’s ears we will win him over and keep you out of trouble!

  • Win him over to what? The lie, that would have to be supported by countless other lies?
  • Keep you out of trouble. With whom? Man? God?

Again, think on these things:

  • Human wisdom raises a man up.
  • Loving kindness brings a man down.
  • Human wisdom says: How can I benefit myself?
  • Loving kindness says: How can I benefit another?
  • Human wisdom strives for greatness.
  • Loving kindness strives for goodness.
  • Human wisdom is related to the human will.
  • Loving kindness is related to the Divine Will.
  • Human wisdom used the Cross to remove Man’s Saviour.
  • Loving kindness used the Cross to remove man’s sin.
