IF I BE LIFTED UP…..

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.

John 12:32

The most remarkable characteristics of the preaching of Jesus is that He did not just declare the truth, He said:

I am the truth.

He did not just announce or broadcast a Gospel:

He Himself was the Gospel.

We need to realize that the very brief 3 year public ministry of Jesus was drawing to a close, and that He was soon to be arrested, tried and condemned to death on the Cross.

His message, (that wonderful message!) He came to bring to all mankind had been rejected both morally and officially by most of those around Him. Much like today’s world, and for all intents and purposes the mission of Jesus Christ had failed, and yet Jesus proclaimed that:

If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me.

The ‘all’ meaning without distinction, not without exception, whether Jews, Greeks or Romans or any other nationality, He is the Saviour of The World! Jesus draws all without distinction. We can rejoice that Jesus is Mine! He has no competitor. All men and all women have the same spiritual need without distinction.

  • We all need the Love of God: and we find it in Jesus.
  • We all need Forgiveness: and we find it in Jesus.
  • We all need Inward Cleansing: and we find it in Jesus.

It is the blood of Christ that cleanses us from all sin.

We all need hope in the future, and it comes from Jesus. We all need assurance of a heavenly destination once we breath our last and bid this world farewell, and it comes from the one who said:

If I be lifted up, I will draw all men to me.

Some say that Jesus draws men to Himself either in Grace or in Judgement, but what they fail to realise is that Jesus only draws people to Himself who are willing to come, and our Lord will not draw all men to the final judgment because they will be compelled,  whether they want to or not.

Finally, note the emphasis of the words of Jesus:

I will draw all men unto me.

Jesus is the magnet, not us! It is Christ in us that does the work, not the other way around. One of the reasons people by-pass the Church today and have little interest in spiritual matters, is because it is preaching itself, not Jesus. All human hearts need Him. All may be saved by Him. All ought to be saved by Him.

Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

Isaiah 45:22
