HOW TO PRAY
Some people find it difficult to pray whilst others pray without any difficulty at all knowing just what to say and how to say it, and most importantly, what to say.
The Bible tells us to:
- Pray for the life of the King. (Ezra 6:10) – Yes! We are to pray for our leaders, no matter who they are!!
- Pray to the Father in secret. (Matthew 6:6) – Our prayer time is private – between God and us.
- Pray for those who use us. (Luke 6:28) – Yes! We are to pray for those who don’t like us.
- Pray lest we enter into temptation. (Luke 22:46) – Our world is FULL to the brim with temptations.
- Pray without ceasing. (1Thessalonians 5:17) – So often we stop praying.
- Pray for one another. (James 5:16) – How many of us do this?
So how do we do this?
I was sent an email on How to Pray some years ago and although I do not know the author of it, I am hoping he/she will permit me to reproduce this wonderful and very effective help for you in the hope that it will assist with your prayer life, as it did mine.
The Five Finger Prayer

- The Thumb. This is nearest to you so begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. Pray for your loved ones.
- The Pointing Finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. Teachers, Doctors, the Police and Pastors. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction.
- The Longest Finger. It reminds us of our Leaders and our Kueen. Pray for them together with the leaders in business and industry. These are the people who shape our country and guide public opinion. They need God’s guidance.
- The Ring Finger. This is the weakest finger we have, and it reminds us to pray for those who are experiencing great sorrow, those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need our prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.
- The Smallest Finger. This reminds us how small we are and how BIG God is. This little finger will remind you to pray for yourself, because by the time you have prayed (really prayed!) for all the other four groups, you will be amazed at how your own needs will be put into proper perspective, and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.
REMEMBER!
Don’t tell God how big your storm is. Tell the storm how big your God is!
