THE TOWER OF BABEL

And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

Genesis 11:3-4

God’s greatness versus man’s folly and stupidity.

The area of Chaldea, Babylonia was the first great centre of idolatry where the sun, the moon and the stars were worshipped and in v4 we read of a City, a Tower and a Name, all three of which represent:

  • PRIDE – A City
  • POWER – A Tower
  • PRESTIGE – A Name

In v5 we read that God came down to see the City and the Tower, and it is interesting to note that God was not asked to visit, simply because He was not invited. He was not in their thoughts and plans.

Happy are those whose thoughts and plans are based on God’s guidance, but sad are those who ignore the Creator.

What God builds will last forever.

What man builds will crumble.

The Tower of Babel is an example of replacing God’s will with self-will and is an exercise in futility.

A glaring example of the inevitable end of human reason is Calvary.

Because it replaces God’s will with self-will. Man’s rebellion against God is seen in his religions, all of which are mirror images of Babel. They are all ingenious and persistent attempts to climb up some other way instead of entering through the Door that God has provided.
