NOTHING AND SOMETHING
A small crowd gathered and the preacher asked if anyone had a subject they would like him to preach on. A man who obviously wanted to mock and belittle him shouted, Nothing!
The preacher immediately began to preach on Nothing.
-
God created the world from nothing.
-
He created the Heavens from nothing.
-
He created the stars and planets from nothing.
- He gave us His law in which there was nothing unjust.
- We, on the other hand, have broken every one of His laws.
- We have nothing to defend ourselves with.
- We have no excuse.
- There will be nothing to comfort us in death or hell.
- Christians have nothing of their own in which to boast.
- They have Christ and in Him there is nothing to cause us grief.
- There is nothing to disrupt the peace of knowing Him.
- There is nothing to fear in eternity.
Ending his sermon, the preacher announced that he would return soon and travelled to the next town. Some time later he returned and began to preach to a larger group on the subject of Something.
He began by telling them:
- There is something above all things.
- There is something in man designed to live forever.
- There is something in us which makes us unhappy.
- But, there is something about the Gospel of Christ that turns that unhappiness into joy.
- There is something that gives us hope.
- There is something that turns the death bed from sadness into gladness.
- There is something in Christians that the world cannot understand.
- There is something in eternity that gives us everlasting joy.
- As Christians who have hearts filled with the love of Christ, we do indeed have something to say, and nothing to fear.
I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:38-39
David Marks, the Boy Preacher, whose heart and life was filled with the love of Christ from a very early age, gave us this message that we too, might devote our lives in service to our wonderful Saviour.
