PROFIT AND LOSS

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Mark 8:36

This is one verse of Scripture that should make all of us think of the world wide financial collapse where billions, if not trillions of pounds and dollars have been made by a few at the expense of many, leaving the likes of you and me wondering just where all the money has gone to? Which then begs the question: Who has got it? And why don’t we just tell that person or company, that we want it back! Surely it has not just disappeared!

The next thing that springs to mind is the word greed.

Thanks to the newspapers and Television, we are all aware that there is evidence of monumental greed and avarice taking place all over the world every day, and equally worrying is that Governments are almost powerless to stop it. A recent survey conducted in a top London newspaper highlights one of the most worrying trends in society and that is the fear that mankind does not know how to properly manage material wealth and progress, with greed and arrogance having a field day.

Is it any wonder then that those in authority are no longer trusted, and equally so is it any wonder that people yearn for a sense of moral purpose, because instinctively we all know that what is going on is wrong!

Today’s verse is fitting because, like Judas who sold his soul for 30 pieces of Silver, man today thinks he can have anything and do everything without any reference to God which is leading to catastrophic results.

He will lose his soul in the process!

For God shall bring every work into judgment with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.

Ecclesiastes 12:14
