HOW TO PRAY

Some people find it difficult to pray whilst others pray without any difficulty at all knowing just what to say and how to say it, and most importantly, what to say.

The Bible tells us to:

  • Pray for the life of the King. (Ezra. 6:10)
  • Pray to the Father in secret. (Matthew 6:6)
  • Pray for those who use us. (Luke 6:28)
  • Pray lest we enter into temptation. (Luke 22:46)
  • Pray without ceasing. (1Thessalonians 5:17)
  • Pray for one another. (James 5:16)

So how do we do this?

I was sent an email on How to Pray some years ago and although I do not know the author of it, I am hoping he/she will allow me to reproduce this wonderful and very effective help for you in the hope that it will assist with your prayer life, as it did mine.

The Five Finger Prayer

  1. The Thumb. This is nearest to you so begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. Pray for your loved ones.
  2. The Pointing Finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. Teachers, Doctors, the Police and Pastors. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction.
  3. The Longest Finger. It reminds us of our Leaders and our Queen. Pray for them together with the leaders in business and industry. These are the people who shape our country and guide public opinion. They need God’s guidance.
  4. The Ring Finger. This is the weakest finger we have and it reminds us to pray for those who are experiencing great sorrow, those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need our prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.
  5. The Smallest finger. This reminds us how small we are and how BIG God is. This little finger will remind you to pray for yourself, because by the time you have prayed (really prayed!) for all the other four groups, you will be amazed at how your own needs will be put into proper perspective, and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

REMEMBER!

Don’t tell God how big your storm is.

Tell the storm how big your God is!

  1. Thank you so much for publishing this.
Not only does it help to put order (and routine) on our daily prayers, but it helps for discipline and focus – it is so easy to just gloss over things in prayer.

    • Thank you for your kind words. I am pleased you found the Daily Reading helpful. We serve a wonderful Saviour and have much to be thankful for.
